I was an Art student that year and while record shopping in 1989 I saw a cool 7" with what appeared to be a Jackson Pollock splatter painting on the front, it was the "Made of stone" single. I liked it, was a Smiths fan and at first listen it sounded pretty good, quite Smiths-y. I turned it over and played the B side, which I liked a lot more, it was more Byrds-y, somehow warmer, and I became convinced there was something a bit special about this band after hearing the line "She looks like a painting - Jackson Pollocks number five". Both songs turned out to be massive growers, I remember playing them repeatedly to everyone who came round. Then I got the album and saw them live a couple of times, the rest is history.
