https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssmLANPmiZc Creative Composing Lab is an exciting opportunity for young people aged 14-18 to compose with professional composer David Horne from Royal Northern College of Music, and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group musicians. Participants spend the day learning techniques, gaining ideas, and trying new things out with a focus on creating compositions for the BCMG musicians. These workshops are a great opportunity for budding composers to interact with both professional musicians and other like-minded young people. For this special Creative Composing Lab as part of BCMG’s Flourish! Project, participants created a minute long fanfare for oboe, trumpet, double bass and tabla that uses a melodic or rhythmic idea from a traditional, folk or popular piece of music from a Commonwealth Nation. As well as participants taking part in-person in Birmingham, international young composers from Uganda, India, Malta and Singapore participated online. At Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, we are passionate about involving and supporting people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds in the creation and performance of new music. We do this through a variety of innovative projects involving composers, BCMG musicians, teachers, researchers, young people and the wider community. The programme reflects our artistic identity, responds to local needs and utilises the excellent resources of the Group – the expert performance skills of the musicians, the Group's repertoire, our links with leading composers in this country and abroad and, our acclaimed commissioning programme.
