https://math.njust.edu.cn/ 2022-11-12报告 Title: De Genne - Landau Q Tensor Model and Geometric Variational Problems Speaker: Lin Fanghua Abstract: The static configurations of (nematic) liquid crystals in the De Genne - Landau Q tensor model isdescribed by the set of 3 by 3 traceless symmetric matrices Sm_0(matrix-valued functions). Such matricesform a linear space which is isomorphic to R^5, and indeed, one can choose an othonormal base of Sm_0 so that{Q in Sm_0: |Q|= 1 } is isometry to S^4. However, in a naive representation, the physics of Q-tensors such asuniaxial and biaxial properties become less evident and consequently hard to describe structures of defects whichare of prominent importance for physics. In this talk, l shall present a preliminary report on a recent joint work with Changyou Wang. An explicit(isometry) description of Sm_0 in terms of S^4 will be given [which greatly simplifies a recent series of papersby A, Pisante et al of about 200 pages long]. With this explicit representation, one can apply(more or less)known theory for harmonic maps to conclude regularity and partial regularity theory,uniaxial and biaxialproperties of energy minimizing configurations and structures for defects which are observed numerically (e.g.,by P.W.Zhang et al) and experimentally. It also opens door to study other problems such as phase transitions anddroplets of liquid crystals.
