[SPIE] Recent progress in high-power 2-μm thin-disk lasers development

https://doi.org/10.1117/12.2602136 Abstract The thin-disk Laser (TDL) geometry allows to minimize thermal effects in the active medium and effectively scale the output power. In a standard TDL, the gain medium is shaped like a very thin (typically in the range of 100 to 300 µm) disk with a large diameter in comparison to its thickness. This shape allows the gain medium to be efficiently water-cooled through the backside and used in a resonator or amplifier in reflection (as an “active mirror”). If the pump and laser spot sizes applied are correspondingly large (typically one to two orders of magnitude larger than the thickness), a one-dimensional heat-flow is obtained, and the scaling of the average output power can simply be achieved by increasing the pumped area and pump power by the same factor. Whereas this scaling has been tremendously succesful using Yb:YAG and Yb:LuAG as gain media in the 1µm region, progress in scaling this technology to the multi-hundred watt level and beyond using other dopant ions has been comparatively slow, one reason for this being the reduced availability of robust high damage threshold optical components for this wavelength. In recent work we conclusively show that the TDL technology has significantly matured to be applied for mid-infrared laser systems, and is reaching a promising turning point. We demonstrate a Tm3+-fiber in-band pumped Ho:YAG thin-disk oscillator operating in fundamental-mode CW regime emitting a record high-power of 112 W with high optical-to optical efficiency of 54.6 % and M2~1.1 with dual wavelength emission at 2090 nm and 2096 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest CW power achieved with a TDL in this wavelength region, surpassing the 100 W milestone. We also present first modelocking results and discuss scaling challenges in ultrafast operation.
